Monday 30th March

English

This week we are looking at a new book called Dog Man by Dav Pilkey. It is a different type of book than we have looked at before. It is a comic book! 

You need to look at the front cover of our book and write a prediction about the text. What do you think it might be about? Why?

Remember to use because when you are writing your sentences to explain why you think something.

Have a go at drawing Dog Man in your books following the video below. 

Label him using adjectives and noun phrases (adjective, adjective noun) and then use these to write a descriptive paragraph.  

Try and think about what his personality might be like as well as how he looks. Is he brave or a coward? Is he strong or weak? Is he a happy character or a sad character? Is he smart or silly?

Here is the first part of the comic and how Dog Man was created! 

If you were writing this what would your character have been called?

You need to choose a different animal's head to create a new character. It could be anything like: Cat Man, Gorilla Guy, Crocodile Man or Slug Man. 

Have a go at either drawing your new character in a comic style format like the one below or cutting and sticking a picture of the animal of your choice. Don't forget to write their name like the last image above - Hooray for.......!

Below are some comic book panels that have had the speech removed from the speech bubbles!

Can you think of what each character might be saying and fill them in? Look at their facial expressions, are they happy, sad, angry or causing mischief?

Your last task for this week is to try and start your own comic strip. 

Look back at the character that you made on Tuesday. 

What could be a crime that they are going to prevent or help stop?

Use the template below to start drawing your own comic strip about your character. 

Remember to include text that isn't in speech bubbles to, to help the reader understand what is happening.

Look at the image below and think about the character. Who are they? What can you see? What do they look like? What do they smell like? What might their clothes feel like? 

Generate some adjectives and noun phrases about the character in order to describe him. Remember a noun phrase is an adjective, adjective noun (don't forget your comma!)

Think of a place or a setting. 

Draw an image of the setting that you are thinking of and colour it in. Before you draw, think about what you want it to look like and what you want to include. Will it be a hot, dry empty place like a desert? Will it be a dense, thick rain forest full of wildlife or a futuristic city with flying cars and robots?

Where is Vesuvius?

Can you remember which country Vesuvius is in?

Using an iPad or computer, find out exactly where it is.  Draw a map to show all you have found out.

Colour or paint the land in green and any parts of water or sea blue. Draw a volcano to represent Vesuvius in the correct place. Label your map and don't forget to give it a title too!

Look back at your setting from yesterday. Can you start to describe key features of the setting, generate adjectives to describe what you have drawn and what it might smell, feel and sound like to be there. 

Use the ideas that you have created to write a new descriptive paragraph about your setting.

Using number cards to 9, pick at random 4 different cards to make 2, 2 digit numbers and add them together. Write out the number sentence and answer in your book. For example:

Ensure you use column addition to work out you sums.

Repeat multiple times to create at least 8 different number sums.
